Beginning The Move

Well, the time has come for us to prepare for our move from a three-bed room, six-room apartment with two full baths and into a one-bedroom apartment. We are downsizing, oh yeah, and big time!!!

We have lived in our current home for over 30 years and there are so many convenient hiding places for possessions in our apartment; closets everywhere, cupboards and even the bed rooms vacated by adult children have now become storage for this and that. There are so many places for tucking things way that I really had no idea where to begin.

Book shelf in my study.

I am a collector of paper, pens, fabric and books, while my husband, though he’s not a collector, he mainly hangs onto books. Books, he says reflect who he is, what eras we’ve both come through, taste in politics, ways that he’s educated himself, people he’s known and learned from. Books are a reflection of his personal history. And though we thinned out our collection some years ago, because we had so much room, more books than we actually needed were allowed to hang around. But now most of them have to go.

Shelves are looking kind of sad without books.

What started as a small crack, a few books taken from the shelves, placed in ‘to give away boxes’ has turned into a major visual fissure with empty shelves in every room. But that’s a good thing. I have to keep reminding myself that we’re not going to burn them, but we’re donating them, perhaps to a book vendor who makes a living selling books to passersby on Broadway or maybe a guy I met who sells books in Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
