SUPER BOWL SUNDAY AND GROUND HOG DAY

Today is February 1st. It might be mid winter, though I’m not sure about that. But it is Super Bowl Sunday and if you are a football fan, it’s a pretty big deal. If not a fan, then it’s a regular Sunday. I suppose I’m a fair weather fan, meaning that I’ll watch if a New York team is playing. There is no NY team in the game today but I might tune-in at some point because I heard it could be a good game and I do like to watch a fun football game.

Tomorrow, February 2nd is Ground Hog Day, a folksy weather prognostication that began in 1887 which always falls on the second day in February. If the groundhog (really a badger) comes out of its winter den and sees a shadow and stays outside of it winter bedroom, this will indicated that spring will be early. However, if the badger turns around and crawls back into the comfort of its winter den, well, that means winter will be extended for another six or more weeks. The news might not be so good tomorrow from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the official location of the Groundhog Club. And it just might be with all the crazy weather that we’ve been having lately that this famous badger just might predict that we will experience an extended winter season. But, keep in mind that this animal is right about 40% of the time.

walking a dog in the snowAt this very moment  a huge winter storm is covering the entire Midwest. It’s a slow moving storm and it’s headed right for us. It’s not even noon yet and I heard from a friend who lives about 200 miles north of NYC and she said that it is already snowing heavily in her area. So, if you ask me, don’t look for daffodils to be popping up in Central Park any time soon.
