POST SUPER BOWL BLUES

It’s only been a couple of days since the Giants won the Super Bowl and I’m wondering what I’ll do now that there’s no football games to look forward to. I’m a new fan and I’ve never experienced this kind of abruptness, a grand end of the season, a big win, and then it’s over.

I remember years ago when I’d bundle up the kids and send them out to play football in the winter snow. They would come back caked in ice and snow, faces burning from the cold. I’d fix them hot chocolate and grilled cheese sandwiches, then drape their wet and frozen clothes over the tub and shower curtain. Back then that was football to me.

It wasn’t until the last couple of years that I’ve given football any real attention. In the past the rules seemed too confusing and, well, the bodies banging into each other and seeing a player carried off the field in a stretcher made me wince.

I don’t know what changed, but now I can watch the game and not feel quite as concerned for a player’s safety, though I still don’t know how these guys can get up after they’ve collided head-first into each other. And I’m certain that a good whack from one of these guys would knock me out for days, if not kill me.

But where was the snow this year? I know that the Super Bowl is played in warm climates, but I don’t remember seeing any games played in the east or mid west where there was any snow to deal with. Where were the sloppy, wet winter football games?

Before the Super Bowl this year we had a short game. The little boy I used to dress in a heavy coat and winter boots is now a man and we have a grandson, a football loving little fellow, who sees nothing wrong in trying to pull down the big guy.

The weekend is coming soon. The Super Bowl dinner leftovers are gone. Everyone is back to work and in school. The weather person says we might have a little dusting of snow this afternoon but there is emptiness, a void where a good rousing football game used to sit.

I hear that the Knicks have acquired a hopeful new player. I do like to watch a good jump shot. I suppose I’ll check out the TV guide and see when the next game is scheduled.
